ABSTRACT. This paper involves an analytical and numerical study to analyse the effect of SMA wires on the low velocity impact response of composite plates. First order shear deformation theory and a two-degree of freedom spring-mass system derived functions for the contact force history which was used to study the impact response of SMA embedded graphite/epoxy flat plates. Numerical modelling in LSDYNA is used to validate the analytical model and studies were performed analytically and numerically to analyse the effect of SMA volume fraction and positioning on the impact performance. Results proved that SMA wires improved impact damage resistance.
